Madonna, you’ve been using religious imagery and symbolism in your work from the very beginning. Is this any different? Have you crossed a line here that you hadn’t crossed before?
“I really don’t think so. Times change, people change, perceptions change… I can see some people being sensitive to depictions of Christ. But they need to understand that I am not suggesting that I am Jesus. Jesus, whether you believe in him and that whole story or not, was supposed to have died for the sins of Christians, right? Maybe, the sins of non-Christians, also… hmmm. When I go up there and crucify myself and put on that crown of thorns, it’s not about me, it’s about the fact that we are all like Jesus… suffering our lot, whatever that may be. I think I’m being very respectful and pious. Yet, that despicable antisemite Mel Gibson can throw a blood bath up on the screen and that’s okay for kids to see… You feel me.”
